Kentucky Safari
Crouched in a tree, lying flat in tall grass, or huddled under brush quiet as a mouse, Garry Walter becomes one with nature, looking for that perfect shot. Although there are lots of wildlife photographers, Walter says
"timing is everything" and "the real challenge is capturing something unusual on film."
Currently living in northern Kentucky, Garry Walter has been shooting nature, wildlife, and outdoor photography for the past 15 years, much of that time while living in Russell County. Walter taught himself the tricks of the trade without any formal photography training.
"I shot over 140,000 frames and 4,000 rolls of film, learning photography by trial and error," says Walter.
It wasn't long before his photography started appearing inside and on dozens of covers of the nation's best known wildlife and outdoor magazines
- 70 covers and counting. You'll also find his work published on postcards, calendars, posters, and as framed prints in private collections.
Proof of Garry Walter's talent is abundant, evidenced by his many awards. Chosen from over 30,000 submitted entries, Walter received first place in the 1999 National Wildlife Photo Contest and first place in both the 1999 and 2000 Balian's Outdoor & Nature Photography magazine photo contest.
And on October 4, Walter will once again be recognized for his excellence in the field of nature photography as a first-place winner of Nature's Best (magazine) & Cemex International Photography Awards, including a trip to Washington, D.C.'s Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History for the awards ceremony.
Walter, at age 51, still longs to be a full-time wildlife photographer, although he says the field is very competitive these days. One goal, not yet reached, says Walter, would be
"to do an outdoor wildlife book project or photojournal."
