Freelance Guidelines

Kentucky Living accepts queries from professional writers and photographers for feature stories on an ongoing basis. We prefer queries rather than submissions.

Stories of interest include: Kentucky-related profiles (people, places, or events), business and social trends, history, biography, recreation, travel, leisure or lifestyle articles or book excerpts; articles on contemporary subjects of general public interest, and general consumer-related features. We do not typically run fiction, poetry, or general nostalgia. Our columns have established columnists, but we do accept queries for our Worth the Trip travel column.

We plan an annual editorial calendar, with the bulk of our feature assignments finalized in July of each year for the coming year. Please make sure we receive queries by mid June to be considered. However, we do assign some features throughout the year as well as evergreen stories, so your story ideas are always welcome.

Feature photos are typically by assignment, but we welcome photo essays or other photo story ideas. We use freelance professional photographers located throughout the state for coverage purposes. We typically work with photographers on an hourly, half-day, and all-day rate, with a package of digital photos delivered from the photoshoot assignment.

Before submitting a story idea, you may want to check Kentucky Living's archives to see if we have covered that topic in the past four to five years. To learn more about our readers, see our Audience Profile.

For terms, style, and other information, please download Kentucky Living's
Writers' Guidelines or Photographers' Guidelines.

Prior to working with new writers or photographers, we request to see samples of your work.

Please use our online database to Submit a Story Idea or samples of your work.

Coverage Area

Kentucky Living's readers are primarily the members of Kentucky's electric cooperatives covering the state. Download a copy of Kentucky's Co-op Map. Our readership areas include all electric co-ops as noted on the map, with the exception of Kenergy and Jackson Purchase co-ops, which do not subscribe for their members. Although we do not have readers in those areas, we still provide coverage in those areas.
