Apple pie pointers

1. A mix of apple types will give your apple pie, cobbler, cake, or other dessert a more interesting flavor.

2. To make fabulous pastry for fried apple pies, combine:

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup chilled lard or shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt.

3. Cut in the fat with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

4. Add 1/4 cup ice cold water and stir to moisten the flour.

5. Gather into a ball, wrap it in plastic, and chill 30 minutes before rolling.
