WORTH THE TRIP
A-maze-ing corn mazes
by: Debra Gibson
For fall family fun, check out one of the dozens of corn mazes across Kentucky
The corn maze at the Life Adventure Center of the Bluegrass (LACBG) in Versailles covers 16 acres and contains three separate mazes. This year the maze is accented by a Kentucky wildcat and a racing horse. There's also a child-size maze, 10 miles of marked trails for horses and hiking, a challenge course, concessions, and live bluegrass music on Fridays in October. The first maze at LACBG opened in September 2010, attracting fewer than 2,000 attendees, but by last year attendance topped 12,000. The number of mazes and activities offered across the state has been growing as well. For toddlers, teens, or adults Families with small children will find activities designed just for the younger set.
First Day Farm in northern Casey County, served by Inter-County Energy, includes a petting zoo, hayrides, a pumpkin cannon, playground, duck pond, gift shop, concessions, walking trails, and pick-your-own pumpkins.
In western Kentucky, Trunnells Farm Market has a straw pyramid and corn pit for kids. In northern Kentucky, Daniel's Petting Zoo has hayrides, pony rides, and farm animals. In Grayson, the Carter County Corn Maze located on the Carter County Fairgrounds has Hay Bale Mountain, movie nights, hayrides, and sorghum making.
For spooky fun for teens or adults, Brandenburg Scared & Cornfused presents The Field of Screams, coined as "Kentuckiana's largest Halloween attraction." There's a 7-acre corn maze, two-story haunted barn, and a trail through the woods. The Hayride to Hell is a 25-minute ride featuring creatures and sights along the way. Most mazes do a different theme each year, so it's fun to return to many of the farms to see what's new. At A-Maize-Ing Farms in Mayfield the maze is 20 acres and this year's theme is "UK basketball champions. Go Cats!"
They also have added pedal car races, toy cars for children, and cars suitable for adults as well.
Plan your fun now with the listing of corn mazes and other fall fun, with most beginning in September.
