Alpacas and apples

B&B owners delight guests with animals and treats

Visitors to Kentucky’s bourbon country know they’ll see barrels and horses, but rare and exotic Suri alpacas are a little unexpected.

But that’s what they’ll find if they visit Washington County’s historic Maple Hill Manor bed and breakfast, owned by innkeepers Todd Allen and Tyler Horton, shown, who also own Bourbon Manor B & B in Bardstown.

Todd Allen and Tyle Horton

They founded Maple Hill in 2001, while looking for a farm to raise alpacas and llamas, and completely restored it with seven guest rooms, a dining room and a farm store selling clothing and gift items made from alpaca fiber sheared from the animals they raise.

More than 5,000 people visit Maple Hill each year, including lodgers, attendees to fiber art events and alpaca education events, and some just come to see the animals. Visitors also attend the holiday open house, scheduled this year from 2-8 p.m. December 1 and 2. The house is decorated for Christmas, the gift shop is brimming and the animals are always around.

Tyler Horton’s prize-winning recipe for lemon-souffle pancakes with blueberry compote can be found here.
