Creating Meals from the Farmers Market

Shopping and cooking seasonally from the farmers market can present a challenge to home cooks who are not used to coming up with recipes on the fly. At this Creating Meals from the Market event, creative ways to handle these challenges and the benefits of shopping and eating seasonally will be covered–from shopping for the best ingredients to keeping ingredients fresh and preparing items you can put by for later. Guests will learn about meal planning and cooking tips to make the best meals possible from the farmers market.

Elmwood Stock Farm’s Mac Stone will explain how organic vegetables, meats and eggs are planned, planted and prepared for the farmers market each week, offering a look at behind-the-scenes work that farmers put into having the freshest items at market. The farm-food tasting will include the fresh Elmwood organic ingredients available in mid-summer and offer the opportunity to share farmers-market-meal tips and tricks among guests.

Elmwood Stock Farm, in Georgetown, Ky., is a 6th-generation family farm that began as a producer of Black Angus breeding-stock cattle. The cattle are still an important part of the farm ecosystem and farm business, though over the past decade, the farm has branched out to produce a variety of organic vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, tobacco and even compost. Elmwood is committed to healthy and wholesome production of superior, high-quality, fresh farm products. Organic certification and close family involvement ensure that safe and sustainable farming practices are followed, livestock are well cared for, and land and water conservation remain a priority.
