Good Bug, Bad Bug: Living with Beneficial Insects

August 4, 2016 9:30 AM

Insects get a bad rap, but not every bug is a bad bug—particularly for organic farmers and people wanting to live more sustainably. Some insects are essential to the food production that takes places at Elmwood Stock Farm. During the Good Bug, Bad Bug tour, Elmwood’s Mac Stone will talk about the insects that live on the farm and those you might see in your own garden and home.

Integrated pest management is the technical term for managing pests in a more natural way, allowing the good bugs to regulate the bad. On this tour, guests will learn how the good bugs are encouraged to stick around the farm and how the not-so-good bugs are discouraged without the use of chemicals. Common insect identification and possibly some hunting for bugs will take place, too.

This is one event in the Elmwood Stock Farm Daytime Tour Series. Receive discounted registration when you register for the whole series at

Elmwood Stock Farm, in Georgetown, Ky., is a 6th-generation family farm that began as a producer of Black Angus breeding-stock cattle. The cattle are still an important part of the farm ecosystem and farm business, though over the past decade, the farm has branched out to produce a variety of organic vegetables, fruits, meats, eggs, tobacco and even compost. Elmwood is committed to healthy and wholesome production of superior, high-quality, fresh farm products. Organic certification and close family involvement ensure that safe and sustainable farming practices are followed, livestock are well cared for, and land and water conservation remain a priority. Elmwood’s produce, eggs and meats can be found at farmers markets, local restaurants and grocery stores, and through its CSA programs in Kentucky and Ohio.
