DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Research:\nA Kentucky Research Series \nRooted in Research is a new series of programs created by the Shelby County Historical Society that will feature local or regional organizations which offer resources for historical research. The first program in the series will be “Bluegrass Roots: Genealogical Records of the Kentucky State Archives”\, presented by Rusty Heckaman\, State Archivist for the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA). This program will be held at the Carnegie Library Center on August 18th from 6:30 – 8 pm (731 College St.) and is free and open to the public. Come and learn about the resources in our state. \nThis series of programs will feature research organizations dedicated to preserving Kentucky’s public historical records for researchers\, genealogists\, scholars\, and writers. In this program you will learn about the holdings of the KDLA\, located in Frankfort\, KY. The Kentucky State Archives is the home of Kentucky’s historic government records\, with over 120\,000 cubic feet of state\, judicial\, and local records dating as far back as pre-statehood. Records are preserved in microform\, photographic prints and negatives\, film\, audiotapes\, videotapes\, digital\, and paper. These materials are often used by historians\, genealogists\, students\, academic researchers\, journalists\, corporate researchers\, government workers\, and historical societies. \nThis program will be followed by a Rooted in Research Field Trip to KDLA on August 28 where attendees will be able to learn more onsite. This program is limited to 25 individuals. As one of the first fortified outposts in the region\, it played a key role in the defense of settlers against Native American attacks during the tumultuous years of Kentucky’s settlement. Learn about a new discovery of a possible William Bryan cabin that stood off of Clays Mill. Guests enjoy three courses\, including savories\, scones and sweets\, Elmwood Inn tea\, period dressed interpreters\, and a guided mansion tour—all set within one of Kentucky’s most beloved historic homes.

DESCRIPTION:As part of a new series of research programs\, Rooted in Research: A Kentucky Research Series\, members and guests of the Shelby County Historical Society have been invited to take part in a research field trip to the Kentucky Department of Libraries & Archives (KDLA) on Friday\, August 28th (a day when KDLA is closed to the public). This special Field Trip is limited to 25 individuals. MUST register by contacting the SCHS office at (502) 513-5555 or emailing director@shelbykyhistory.org. \nTentative plans include:\nArrive at KDLA by 9 am on your own (individuals are welcome to meet at the Museum to carpool or follow one another).\n9 – 11:30 am – tour and hands-on instructions by staff\n11:30 am – 12:30 pm – lunch break on your own\n12:30 – 3:30 pm – individual research.
