SUMMARY:The Last of the Mohicans & How I Survived the French & Indian War
DESCRIPTION:James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans\, set in 1757 and based on the fall of Fort William Henry in the French and Indian War\, represents the birth of American literature. The movie became Hollywood’s most recreated epic about the frontier wilderness and in 1991\, Ted Franklin Belue worked as an extra on the set. For this program he will present an overview and influence of Cooper’s work\, then discuss the madcap phantasmagorical world that he lived in on a Hollywood film set – a genuine\, two-month survival enduro. \nTed Franklin Belue began his professional career as a lecturer at Murray State University\, has been a staff writer for Muzzleloader magazine\, a member of speakers’ bureau for Kentucky Humanities Council\, a History Channel technical and script consultant and commentator\, performed as an “extra” for the television broadcasts River Pirates and Frontier Medicine (both for History Channel); a public lecturer and historical consultant. He is the 2021 winner of the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award. As an author\, he has written numerous books including “Finding Daniel Boone\,” “The Hunters of Kentucky” and “The Long Hunt.” Belue edited Lyman Draper’s “Life of Daniel Boone” and has published more than 100 essays in trade and scholarly publications. He has served as a consultant/commentator for the INSP Network’s “Wild Americans” and Outdoor Channel’s “SHOOTING USA\,” History Channel\, A&E\, BBC\, NBC\, and NPR. \nThe With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series was created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. The SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution\, Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, Painted Stone Settlers\, Inc.\, and the Shelby County Public Library are partnering with the Shelby County Historical Society to present this series of four programs\, this being the final one. These 250th programs were made possible by a generous anonymous donor. \nPrograms are free and open to the public. \nCelebrating 250 years of history in Shelby County\, Kentucky!

Early distilling—both legal and illicit—played a vital role in the region’s economy and survival\, while crafts like quilting\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, and food preservation sustained families for generations. \nThe festival brings these traditions to life through demonstrations\, storytelling\, live music\, local food\, and hands-on heritage experiences\, creating an authentic celebration of Appalachian resilience and community. \nStorytelling is at the heart of the festival\, with scheduled sessions and special guest appearances\, including cast members from the Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners and other heritage voices who help bring Appalachian history and culture to life through personal stories and shared experiences. \nHillbilly BikeFest is a high-energy Saturday feature of the Beattyville Appalachian Memories Festival\, drawing motorcycle enthusiasts from across the region. The day centers around FRYDADDY’S Old School Bike Show for Charity\, a celebrity-judged\, open-class motorcycle show inspired by the large rally events like Sturgis. All bike styles and builds are welcome\, and judging is done blindly\, keeping the focus on craftsmanship and originality. Special appearances by well-known Moonshiners personalities add to the excitement\, creating a lively atmosphere that brings a strong\, engaged crowd to Main Street. SUMMARY:A French Marquis in the New World: Lafayette and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:When Lafayette offered his sincere support for the American cause\, he set the stage for a French alliance. He set sail for America in early 1777 and proceeded to General Washington’s camp. The two stuck up a friendship: Lafayette admired Washington’s leadership and became a became a valued member of Washington’s close-knit military family\, while Washington saw Lafayette as a close confident and adopted son\, impressed with his dedication and courage. Lafayette even spent the harsh winter of 1777-78 with Washington and his men at Valley Forge. \nAt age 23\, Lafayette played a crucial role in the 1781 Siege of Yorktown\, serving as a division commander under Washington to trap British General Cornwallis. From the heights of Malvern Hill\, Lafayette and his men surrounded the British force at Yorktown\, holding them until reinforcements arrived\, thus aiding in securing an end to the American Revolution. Lafayette returned to France where he continued to fight for liberty and equality for all mankind\, in the midst of the French Revolution. He returned to the US in 1824 for a grand tour in which the people of every city he visited greeted him with cheers and exuberant celebrations. In May 1825\, he visited Shelbyville\, KY. \nThe speaker for this program\, Julien Pierre Icher\, is a 32-year-old French national\, Founder\, and President of The Lafayette Trail\, Inc. Our museum will be open from 10 am – 2 pm and currently features “250 Years of Clothing in Shelby County\, Kentucky.” \nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year\, the Shelby County Historical Society (SCHS) is giving our portion of WILD a 250th theme by having members of the Isaac Shelby Chapter of the SAR demonstrate 18th century “art forms” that our forefathers would have been familiar with in the Revolutionary War time period. The following demonstrations are scheduled to take place in front of the Shelby County Historical Society Museum at 627 Main St.\, Shelbyville from 11 am – 2 pm: \n• 18th Century Schooling and Quill Pen & Ink Writing\n• Weapons of the American Revolution\n• Fife & Drum Music\n• Flags of the American Revolution\n• Frontier Food \nPlease take time to step inside the Museum and go through our latest exhibit\, “250 Years of Clothing in Shelby County\, Kentucky.” This exhibit features many items from the SCHS collections; loaned items from Steve Abolt\, who has created\, managed\, and produced historical events throughout the United States for over 30 years and has been replicating historical clothing for over 40 years; and items from the personal collection of Brian Cushing (Museum Committee Chair) and his wife\, Amy Liebert. Several reproduction items were hand-sewn by Liebert. DESCRIPTION:Leading a Virginia State military force during the Revolutionary War\, George Rogers Clark (1752 – 1818) secured a region West of the Appalachian Mountains from British control for the United States. Despite this early success\, Clark’s later life was marred by financial difficulties\, slanderous rumors\, and an international scandal. This presentation will unpack the complicated and often nearly unbelievable details of this uniquely American story from the early days of the founding of the United States. \nThis is the second program in the With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. This program will be presented by Brian Cushing. Brian served as a volunteer at Historic Locust Grove\, the last home of George Rogers Clark\, from 1999\, and later as Program Director. There\, he had the opportunity over a period of years to take a deep dive into documentation related to George Rogers Clark and his complex\, sometimes almost unbelievable\, life. Cushing served as Executive Director of the Shelby County Historical Society from 2021-2023\, at which time he became Historic District Coordinator for the City of Shelbyville. He lives in Pleasureville\, KY with his wife Amy\, and they are the hosts of The Victorian Barroom on YouTube. \nThe SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Guests will learn how the evolution of the American uniform mirrored a country’s definition of itself from 1806 – 1850. \nSteve is a man of many talents. A retired commanding officer of the 7th US Infantry Living History Association\, he has created\, managed\, and produced historical events throughout the United States for over 30 years. In March 2017 he organized and managed the 250th birthday anniversary of Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage in Nashville\, TN. In 2011 he organized and commanded the Bicentennial Commemoration of the Battle of Tippecanoe for the Tippecanoe County Historical Society. Steve\, along with his 7th INF staff\, organized and produced the largest event of the War of 1812 Bicentennial in 2015. Recognized as an expert in U.S. military uniforming of the early republic period\, Steve has been replicating historical clothing for over 40 years. He operates Allegheny Arsenal and manufactures exacting replicas of American military and civilian uniforms and attire. Steve also has numerous stage\, film\, and television credits to his name. \nThe SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. SUMMARY:Remembering the Simpsonville Massacre
DESCRIPTION:161 years later\, an incident which occurred on January 25\, 1865 in Shelby County\, KY\, is still remembered by many. Nearing the end of the Civil War\, Company E of the 5th US Colored Cavalry (USCC) was ambushed by Confederate guerrillas in Simpsonville\, KY. The company was based at Camp Nelson in Jessamine County\, KY and had been assigned to drive 900 head of cattle from Camp Nelson to Louisville over the countryside\, as part of the Union supply chain to supply the city with beef. Unexpectedly\, the soldiers at the rear of the herd were attacked by Confederate guerrillas. When the chaos ended\, 22 men were found dead and more were wounded. Their bodies lie scattered along the road (US Hwy 60) and in surrounding fields. At the time\, local newspaper coverage of the incident was minimal. Learn what we now know about these 22 US Army Veterans and this incident\, decades later. \nPlease join the Shelby County Historical Society (SCHS) on Tuesday\, February 24th at 6:30 pm for Remembering the Simpsonville Massacre. This free program\, part of the History Matters Speakers Series\, honors Black History Month and will take place at the Simpsonville Methodist Church (105 1st St. Simpsonville\, KY). Built 10 years after the massacre\, the church sits close to the massacre site. This program will give an overview of the project and its future. A panel discussion will be held with special guests: Jerry Miller\, SCHS member\, former state legislator and local historian; Juanita White\, SCHS member\, historian and scriptwriter; and Steve Phan\, Chief of Interpretation at Camp Nelson National Monument. Each speaker will give a brief talk about their involvement in this ongoing project to discover the exact location of the soldiers’ grave\, with time for questions at the end. Each soldier’s name will be read aloud at the beginning of the program\, in honor of their service to our country. \nCelebrate 250 Years of Shelby County\, Kentucky history with us!!

Known as Lady Washington\, she was considered formidable\, a worthy partner of her husband\, who very much helped create a sense of what the presidency is today. As part of our nation’s 250 celebration\, join us as we partner with the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for this program showcasing important artifacts\, including a swatch of Martha Washington’s wedding dress\, that will be on display in our Founder’s Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Valentines Day – Love & Marriage is a special program in the History Matters Speakers Series that will feature Tish Boyer\, Registrar and Collections Engagement Manager for the Frazier Kentucky History Museum. Based on the current exhibit by the same name at The Frazier\, Tish will explore themes related to courtship\, love and wedding traditions prevalent in Kentucky over the last 150 years. On display for the program will be a few of the artifacts featured in what is the largest number of historical costumes ever on display at The Frazier\, which includes 50 dresses worn by Kentucky brides. The exhibit at the Frazier (on display until March 29) showcases a cultural element by including dresses and accessories used by Kentucky brides from the Jewish\, Hindu\, Mexican\, Palestinian\, Nigerian\, Buddhist and African American cultures. Discover something old\, something new\, something borrowed\, and something blue(grass) during this entertaining program. \nThis FREE program is held in collaboration between the Shelby County Historical Society and the Shelby County Public Library on February 10th at 6:30 pm at the Carnegie Library Center (731 College St.\, Shelbyville\, KY). \nCelebrate 250 years of Shelby County history with us!
