SUMMARY:The Long Run Massacre & Floyd’s Defeat
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time to 1781 when Painted Stone Station was a thriving station on the Kentucky Frontier. Squire Boone\, Jr.\, younger brother of famed frontiersman Daniel Boone\, established this fort in Shelby County in 1779/1780. After constant Native American harassment\, the settlers evacuated in September 1781 to Lynn’s Station in Louisville. They were attacked on their way in the area that is known as Eastwood\, KY today. Learn about life on the frontier through an event that actually took place in Shelby County\, KY during the years of the Revolutionary War. Demos\, live canon firing\, and main reenactment at 2 pm followed by a prisoner exchange and Native American storytelling. The SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) will provide a special American flag ceremony prior to the battle re-enactment. Please bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on.\nSaturday at 11 am – special time set aside for Boy Scout/Girl Scout troops that wish to attend. Email helenmckinney1969@gmail.com for more info. The attacks will be remembered by nationwide tributes\, memorial ceremonies\, and special broadcasts such as this one. VIP ticketholders will get access to the museum\, including: indoor bathrooms and air conditioning\, vendors pouring exclusive VIP beers\, three floors of museum exhibitions to explore\, and the Frazier’s Gateway Garden\, which extends from Main to Washington Streets on the east side of the building. \nTraffic will be rerouted so the festival can occupy the whole block. \nON TAP \nThis year\, in honor of America250\, we will have about 250 specialty beers—many of which will be available exclusively to festivalgoers who purchased VIP Admission. On tap will be a wide variety of craft and specialty beers: over 80 local\, regional\, and out-of-state breweries will be represented. In addition to the selection of standard craft and specialty beers\, festivalgoers will have access to a selection of NA beers\, gluten-free/gluten-reduced beers\, low-calorie IPAs\, hard ciders\, and spiked seltzers. \nMUSIC \nOld Lou’s Ragtime Band will play jazz\, Dixieland\, and swing numbers. DESCRIPTION:July 4th\, 1776 is the date historically considered as the birth of our nation. The Liberty Bell\, inscribed with “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land\,” remains one of our nation’s longstanding symbols of independence. \nEveryone is invited to participate in Freedom Bells – a nation-wide call to toll the bells of freedom in honor of America’s 250th birthday. This celebratory bell ringing will take place at Noon – everyone is asked to ring bells ring bells 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies and in remembrance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nOrganized by the Military Order of the World Wars\, this shared moment celebrating liberty is an event anyone can take part in. Whether gathered at a public ceremony\, participating from home\, or serving far from home\, Freedom Bells can be rung across the United States of America. SUMMARY:The Last of the Mohicans & How I Survived the French & Indian War
DESCRIPTION:James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans\, set in 1757 and based on the fall of Fort William Henry in the French and Indian War\, represents the birth of American literature. The movie became Hollywood’s most recreated epic about the frontier wilderness and in 1991\, Ted Franklin Belue worked as an extra on the set. For this program he will present an overview and influence of Cooper’s work\, then discuss the madcap phantasmagorical world that he lived in on a Hollywood film set – a genuine\, two-month survival enduro. \nTed Franklin Belue began his professional career as a lecturer at Murray State University\, has been a staff writer for Muzzleloader magazine\, a member of speakers’ bureau for Kentucky Humanities Council\, a History Channel technical and script consultant and commentator\, performed as an “extra” for the television broadcasts River Pirates and Frontier Medicine (both for History Channel); a public lecturer and historical consultant. He is the 2021 winner of the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award. As an author\, he has written numerous books including “Finding Daniel Boone\,” “The Hunters of Kentucky” and “The Long Hunt.” Belue edited Lyman Draper’s “Life of Daniel Boone” and has published more than 100 essays in trade and scholarly publications. He has served as a consultant/commentator for the INSP Network’s “Wild Americans” and Outdoor Channel’s “SHOOTING USA\,” History Channel\, A&E\, BBC\, NBC\, and NPR. \nThe With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series was created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. The SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution\, Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, Painted Stone Settlers\, Inc.\, and the Shelby County Public Library are partnering with the Shelby County Historical Society to present this series of four programs\, this being the final one. These 250th programs were made possible by a generous anonymous donor. \nPrograms are free and open to the public. \nCelebrating 250 years of history in Shelby County\, Kentucky!
