DESCRIPTION:July 4th\, 1776 is the date historically considered as the birth of our nation. The Liberty Bell\, inscribed with “Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land\,” remains one of our nation’s longstanding symbols of independence. \nEveryone is invited to participate in Freedom Bells – a nation-wide call to toll the bells of freedom in honor of America’s 250th birthday. This celebratory bell ringing will take place at Noon – everyone is asked to ring bells ring bells 13 times in honor of the original 13 colonies and in remembrance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. \nOrganized by the Military Order of the World Wars\, this shared moment celebrating liberty is an event anyone can take part in. Whether gathered at a public ceremony\, participating from home\, or serving far from home\, Freedom Bells can be rung across the United States of America. DESCRIPTION:James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Last of the Mohicans\, set in 1757 and based on the fall of Fort William Henry in the French and Indian War\, represents the birth of American literature. The movie became Hollywood’s most recreated epic about the frontier wilderness and in 1991\, Ted Franklin Belue worked as an extra on the set. For this program he will present an overview and influence of Cooper’s work\, then discuss the madcap phantasmagorical world that he lived in on a Hollywood film set – a genuine\, two-month survival enduro. \nTed Franklin Belue began his professional career as a lecturer at Murray State University\, has been a staff writer for Muzzleloader magazine\, a member of speakers’ bureau for Kentucky Humanities Council\, a History Channel technical and script consultant and commentator\, performed as an “extra” for the television broadcasts River Pirates and Frontier Medicine (both for History Channel); a public lecturer and historical consultant. He is the 2021 winner of the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award. As an author\, he has written numerous books including “Finding Daniel Boone\,” “The Hunters of Kentucky” and “The Long Hunt.” Belue edited Lyman Draper’s “Life of Daniel Boone” and has published more than 100 essays in trade and scholarly publications. He has served as a consultant/commentator for the INSP Network’s “Wild Americans” and Outdoor Channel’s “SHOOTING USA\,” History Channel\, A&E\, BBC\, NBC\, and NPR. \nThe With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series was created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. The SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution\, Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, Painted Stone Settlers\, Inc.\, and the Shelby County Public Library are partnering with the Shelby County Historical Society to present this series of four programs\, this being the final one. These 250th programs were made possible by a generous anonymous donor. \nPrograms are free and open to the public. \nCelebrating 250 years of history in Shelby County\, Kentucky!

Held in historic downtown Beattyville\, at the confluence of the North and South Forks of the Kentucky River\, this festival honors generations of knowledge passed down through families and communities. \nFrom homesteading and self-reliance skills to distilling and moonshine history\, Appalachian culture was built on ingenuity\, hard work\, and making do with what the land provided. Early distilling—both legal and illicit—played a vital role in the region’s economy and survival\, while crafts like quilting\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, and food preservation sustained families for generations. \nThe festival brings these traditions to life through demonstrations\, storytelling\, live music\, local food\, and hands-on heritage experiences\, creating an authentic celebration of Appalachian resilience and community. \nStorytelling is at the heart of the festival\, with scheduled sessions and special guest appearances\, including cast members from the Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners and other heritage voices who help bring Appalachian history and culture to life through personal stories and shared experiences. \nHillbilly BikeFest is a high-energy Saturday feature of the Beattyville Appalachian Memories Festival\, drawing motorcycle enthusiasts from across the region. The day centers around FRYDADDY’S Old School Bike Show for Charity\, a celebrity-judged\, open-class motorcycle show inspired by the large rally events like Sturgis. All bike styles and builds are welcome\, and judging is done blindly\, keeping the focus on craftsmanship and originality. Special appearances by well-known Moonshiners personalities add to the excitement\, creating a lively atmosphere that brings a strong\, engaged crowd to Main Street. Proceeds from the bike show benefit Shriners Hospital for Children. \nThe afternoon continues with the annual Shiners for Shriners Charity Ride\, a guided group ride along the Moonshine Trail through some of the best riding roads in eastern Kentucky. SUMMARY:A French Marquis in the New World: Lafayette and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:When Lafayette offered his sincere support for the American cause\, he set the stage for a French alliance. He set sail for America in early 1777 and proceeded to General Washington’s camp. The two stuck up a friendship: Lafayette admired Washington’s leadership and became a became a valued member of Washington’s close-knit military family\, while Washington saw Lafayette as a close confident and adopted son\, impressed with his dedication and courage. Lafayette even spent the harsh winter of 1777-78 with Washington and his men at Valley Forge. \nAt age 23\, Lafayette played a crucial role in the 1781 Siege of Yorktown\, serving as a division commander under Washington to trap British General Cornwallis. From the heights of Malvern Hill\, Lafayette and his men surrounded the British force at Yorktown\, holding them until reinforcements arrived\, thus aiding in securing an end to the American Revolution. Lafayette returned to France where he continued to fight for liberty and equality for all mankind\, in the midst of the French Revolution. He returned to the US in 1824 for a grand tour in which the people of every city he visited greeted him with cheers and exuberant celebrations. In May 1825\, he visited Shelbyville\, KY. \nThe speaker for this program\, Julien Pierre Icher\, is a 32-year-old French national\, Founder\, and President of The Lafayette Trail\, Inc. (lafayette250.org). He is a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon\, one of the few French Grandes Ecoles. Julien is the host and director of Follow The Frenchmen\, a YouTube-based not-for-profit web series produced by The Lafayette Trail\, Inc. exploring and interpreting the significance of Lafayette’s legacy\, in particular the Frenchman’s tour of the U.S. in 1824-1825. Over the past few years\, he has given over 115 lectures\, primarily about Lafayette and the Farewell Tour. \nThhe With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series was created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. The SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution\, Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, and the Painted Stone Settlers\, Inc. are partnering with the Shelby County Historical Society to present this series of four programs. These 250th programs were made possible by a generous anonymous donor. \nPrograms are free and open to the public. Appetizers served from 6 – 6:30 pm. \nCelebrating 250 years of history in Shelby County\, Kentucky!

SUMMARY:McDowell Night at the Norton Center
DESCRIPTION:This special evening will include a chautauqua performance highlighting the significant impact of early American statesman and Revolutionary War officer Samuel McDowell\, known as the “Son of Virginia\, Father of Kentucky.” McDowell presided over nine of the 10 constitutional conventions held in Danville from 1784-1792\, leading to Kentucky’s separation from Virginia. He was also the father of Dr. Ephraim McDowell\, a pioneering surgeon who performed the first successful ovariotomy in 1809 in Danville.\nDuring the McDowell Night events\, the original copy of Kentucky’s constitution will be on display\, along with historic political papers and meeting minutes from the constitutional conventions. In addition\, the Norton Center’s own exhibit – titled “Be The People” – will also be on display.

DESCRIPTION:The Shelby County Historical Society will be taking part in the 2026 WILD about Shelbyville Arts & Music Festival on Saturday\, May 9th from 11 am – 2 pm with special demonstrations from the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution)\, a visit from the Living Statues\, a look at a historical garment that didn’t make it into our current exhibit by Amy Liebert and Brian Cushing\, a special reading of the Declaration of Independence at 1 pm at Stargazer Plaza by Cushing\, and author John Graham will be selling his book\, Freedom’s Teacher: The Story of Elijah P. Marrs. Our museum will be open from 10 am – 2 pm and currently features “250 Years of Clothing in Shelby County\, Kentucky.” \nIn honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year\, the Shelby County Historical Society (SCHS) is giving our portion of WILD a 250th theme by having members of the Isaac Shelby Chapter of the SAR demonstrate 18th century “art forms” that our forefathers would have been familiar with in the Revolutionary War time period. The following demonstrations are scheduled to take place in front of the Shelby County Historical Society Museum at 627 Main St.\, Shelbyville from 11 am – 2 pm: \n• 18th Century Schooling and Quill Pen & Ink Writing\n• Weapons of the American Revolution\n• Fife & Drum Music\n• Flags of the American Revolution\n• Frontier Food \nPlease take time to step inside the Museum and go through our latest exhibit\, “250 Years of Clothing in Shelby County\, Kentucky.” This exhibit features many items from the SCHS collections; loaned items from Steve Abolt\, who has created\, managed\, and produced historical events throughout the United States for over 30 years and has been replicating historical clothing for over 40 years; and items from the personal collection of Brian Cushing (Museum Committee Chair) and his wife\, Amy Liebert. Several reproduction items were hand-sewn by Liebert. A special garment from the SCHS collection that did not make it into the exhibit will be on display for visitors to view and you can spend some one-on-one time with the couple as they share their expertise about clothing. “250 Years of Clothing in Shelby County\, Kentucky” was made possible by grants from America250KY/Kentucky Historical Society and the Shelby County Community Foundation.\nYou won’t want to miss the live wax figure artform of Living Statues\, as they bring to life the theme of the festival in creative ways from 12 – 2 pm. You’ll be mesmerized by the illusion they create as they transport onlookers to another time and place\, dressed in costume and standing motionless. Come see who they will portray at Stargazer Plaza and 6th Street!\nSCHS member and teacher\, John Graham\, has just released Freedom’s Teacher: The Story of Elijah P. Marrs. With illustrations by Sam Jordan\, this book focuses on Marrs’ childhood\, adolescence\, and later contributions to equal rights and education for Blacks in central Kentucky.\nIf you like what you see during the WILD Festival\, contact us about our 2026 Summer History Camp which will explore 250 years of American history. Truax will also bring along Mary Lincoln – wife of “Honest Abe” – who will be portrayed by his significant other\, Laura Schlesinger. \nAdmission is free\, but seating is limited to the building’s capacity.

SUMMARY:George Rogers Clark: Service\, Hardship\, and Legacy in the Early American West
DESCRIPTION:Leading a Virginia State military force during the Revolutionary War\, George Rogers Clark (1752 – 1818) secured a region West of the Appalachian Mountains from British control for the United States. Despite this early success\, Clark’s later life was marred by financial difficulties\, slanderous rumors\, and an international scandal. This presentation will unpack the complicated and often nearly unbelievable details of this uniquely American story from the early days of the founding of the United States. \nThis is the second program in the With Liberty & Justice For All speaker series created by the Shelby County Historical Society and the Countdown to USA 250! Committee. This program will be presented by Brian Cushing. Brian served as a volunteer at Historic Locust Grove\, the last home of George Rogers Clark\, from 1999\, and later as Program Director. There\, he had the opportunity over a period of years to take a deep dive into documentation related to George Rogers Clark and his complex\, sometimes almost unbelievable\, life. Cushing served as Executive Director of the Shelby County Historical Society from 2021-2023\, at which time he became Historic District Coordinator for the City of Shelbyville. He lives in Pleasureville\, KY with his wife Amy\, and they are the hosts of The Victorian Barroom on YouTube. \nThe SAR (Sons of the American Revolution\, Gov. Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution\, Isaac Shelby Chapter)\, the Painted Stone Settlers\, Inc. and the Shelby County Public Library are partnering with the Shelby County Historical Society to present this program\, held at the Carnegie Library Center.
