SUMMARY:Frazier250: What was the Last Native American Village in Kentucky?
DESCRIPTION:What was the last Native American village in Kentucky? Where was it\, who lived there\, and how did they live? Join the Frazier’s Simon Meiners in a conversation with archaeologist Dr. A. Gwynn Henderson about the last Native American settlement in what is now Kentucky. As the Frazier marks 250 years since 1776—the year America declared its independence—we shine a light on the Native American presence in Kentucky leading up to that time. The late 18th century saw not only the arrival of Euroamerican settlers like Thomas Walker\, James Harrod\, and Daniel Boone in Kentucky—it also saw the abandonment of Kentucky’s last remaining Native American villages as distinct communities. \nDr. Henderson is the Education Director at the Kentucky Archaeological Survey. She has carried out field research in Kentucky\, the Ohio Valley\, Tennessee\, and Mexico\, and she is particularly interested in researching the lifeways of the ancient Native farming cultures of the middle Ohio Valley and the history of mid-18th century Indigenous groups in the same region. She will explore what the material evidence suggests about Lower Shawnee Town (Greenup County) and more. \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nFrazier250: What was the Last Native American Village in Kentucky?\nSunday\, October 18\, 2026\n1–2 p.m.\nFrazier Kentucky History Museum \nAdmission: Free with cost of museum admission (free for members) (must RSVP)

SUMMARY:Fourth Annual Heritage Food Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us this fall for Heritage Food Fest; November 6-9th (8 AM-10 AM) at Terrapin Hill Farm where we celebrate food and herbal medicine for personal\, family\, and community sovereignty. This is a festival bringing forward lessons from surviving in the mountains for centuries before the arrival of box stores. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Andrew Bentley who many of you met last year. His clinical expertise and wildcrafting skills are deep\, gathered over decades from both oldtimer teachers and modern scientific tools and communities of practice. Also back by popular demand\, we will learn the gardening technique of Susana Lein\, who has turned Salamander Springs Farm from a hardpan clay thicket on a ridge in Rockcastle County to one of the most productive small acreage off-grid homesteads in North America. YouTube is great and all\, but come see us in person where you can ask questions\, catch the wisdom in an off-hand off-camera remark\, and enjoy all that face to face time brings. Gather with people working through the same questions you are– ferment for health of the body and for the society\, starting seeds of change and improving fertility of the soil we plant them in… \nExpect opportunities to learn about growing\, gathering\, processing\, preparing\, preserving\, and sharing food suited to our home lands. Then go home like past participants and make the cheese\, start the hives! Whether you favor tamales\, chicharrones and manteca– tamales prepared by our friend Irma whose instruction and delicious product delighted fest goers last year– or hoecakes\, cracklins and lard; come fix some with us this Fall. Let’s each take the next step towards greater self-sufficiency\, food sovereignty\, and the recovery of lost know-how. May our community sprout like old time seeds: grown not for uniformity and long-term storage\, but for taste\, nutrition\, and more. Planning for a Seed Swap Sunday morning. Hope to see you there. \nBuy tickets today at http://heritagefoodfest.org. Thank you for doing that this month if you are able and want to support this continued project. Buying sooner helps us plan food; as usual\, fest tickets include camping and two meals per day Friday-Sunday.
