Kentucky spay neuter clinics resource list

I’ll never forget what a shelter worker once told me.

“We’ll never adopt our way out of the pet overpopulation problem. More people have got to spay and neuter their pets. There aren’t enough homes, and not enough room in the shelters.”

If adoption alone is not the answer, then it’s up to us in rescue to help people get their animals altered. Luckily, the word is starting to get out, and more people are indeed getting their pet altered. But too many people simply can’t afford it, or don’t know where to go. And animals who end up in a shelter are paying a high price for it.

The advantages of altering your pet are many: your pet will be healthier, live longer, have less chance of breast and testicular cancer, will not roam as much, will be better behaved without the “distraction” of wanting to breed, and contrary to popular opinion, will not become fat as a result of being altered. Too many treats would most likely be the culprit.

So this Creature Comforts column is devoted to a directory of low-cost spay-neuter clinics across Kentucky. It’s still a work in progress: many more clinics are out there I’m sure, but I’ve limited this directory to those who specifically advertise themselves as being low-cost. So if you are familiar with a low-cost clinic, please let me know at psparrow@kentuckyliving.com. I’d like to have as comprehensive a list as possible that can be used as a reference by shelters and pet owners all across Kentucky.

And I suggest you contact the below organizations before bringing your pet in. Some of these programs run strictly on donations: the number of clinics they hold sometimes depends on what funds are available. Days and prices vary, so you’ll also want to confirm that information, and whether you qualify. Clinics listed here are categorized by county, and each name is also a link to their website where you can find more information like hours of operation and costs.

So please, let’s keep the puppies and kittens out of the shelter!
