Danville community mural named 2026 Beautify the Bluegrass Governor’s Award Winner
Community-driven mural transforms downtown wall into an award-winning landmark
The Danville Community Mural has earned the 2026 Beautify the Bluegrass Governor’s Award, the highest honor in Kentucky Living’s annual program recognizing projects that strengthen communities and showcase local pride. Presented by Kentucky Electric Cooperatives in partnership with the Office of Gov. Andy Beshear, the award celebrates Kentuckians who take action to make their hometowns more vibrant, welcoming and beautiful. This year’s winner transformed an empty 800-square-foot wall in the heart of downtown Danville into a striking work of public art that reflects the community’s history, character and sense of place.
Created by local artist Kirby Stafford in partnership with the Danville-Boyle County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of Danville and other community supporters, the mural serves as both a landmark and a gathering place. The artwork features recognizable symbols of the community, including the Boyle County Courthouse cupola, Constitution Square and Danville’s designation as the “Birthplace of Kentucky.” Together, these elements tell the story of a city proud of its heritage while creating a welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.
The award was presented during a ceremony in Frankfort, where state leaders praised the project’s impact. Gov. Andy Beshear noted that beautification efforts like the Danville mural highlight Kentuckians who are willing to roll up their sleeves and improve their communities. Mike Mangeot, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Tourism, said projects recognized through Beautify the Bluegrass help create places that residents are proud to call home and visitors are excited to experience.
Now in its 10th year, Beautify the Bluegrass shines a spotlight on community-driven projects across the Commonwealth. From restoring public spaces and preserving local history to improving parks, trails and natural resources, the initiative recognizes the power of grassroots efforts to enhance quality of life. Following the announcement of five finalists earlier this year, readers of Kentucky Living cast votes statewide to select the Danville Community Mural as the 2026 Governor’s Award recipient.

The Danville mural exemplifies that spirit, transforming a blank wall into a vibrant symbol of local pride while demonstrating how art can strengthen community identity and inspire connection. As Kentucky prepares for the 11th annual Beautify the Bluegrass program in 2027, the Danville Community Mural stands as a powerful example of how a shared vision can leave a lasting impact on a community.
