How Electricity Enters Your Home

Step 1

Electricity gets to your home or business through
a “service drop,” which is generally a collection of three or four wires
running from the pole-mounted or ground-level transformer, to your building. Plastic
covers protect service drop wires from the weather.

Step 2

The electricity passes into your house through
a meter, which keeps track of how much electricity you use so the utility knows
how much to charge on your electric bill. Electric meters have been proven to
be extremely accurate.

Step 3

From the meter, electricity actually enters your
building through a “service panel,” containing either circuit breakers
or fuses. From the service panel wires take electricity to the different areas
of your house. The circuit breakers or fuses protect your house from overloaded
or damaged wires.
