Be safe as you’re walking your neighborhoods
RAWPIXEL.COM/ADOBE STOCK As the days get shorter and the sun rises later, make sure your evening walk or morning run is as safe as it can be.
In the hours before sunrise and after the sun goes down, being seen while you’re out walking or running is critical to keeping you safe.
Luckily, high-visibility clothing, reflective materials for shoes, clothing and hats, and even LED lights worn on wrists and ankles can let drivers know you’re sharing the road with them. Using both reflective clothing and LED lighting can give you extra visibility. There are a lot of options to ramp up personal safety:
- LED glow vests use rechargeable LED fiber optics and reflective patterns that make you visible 1,500 feet away
- Clip-on wearable chest or waist lights shine on the ground and ensure drivers see you. Look for one that’s at least 60 lumens, has flashing modes and can resist water to fend off rain.
- Rechargeable LED slap bands offer the fun of a slap bracelet while adding a bright LED to the wrist, arm or ankle for extra visibility.
- LED necklaces or carabiner puck lights attached to a Halloween candy bucket or costume keep kids visible while trick-or-treating.
Reflective clothing and LEDs are widely available at a number of different price points and options to help you stay safe when you’re sharing the road.
