Co-op 101

Member Matters

As a not-for-profit, member-owned utility, the mission of Shelby Energy is to power our member’s commu-

nities in several ways:

  • Capital credits. Excess revenues are periodically refunded to members as capital credits.
  • Member control. You’re a member, and an owner, not a customer. Shelby Energy’s democratically elected board of directors represent members’ best interests in co-op business decisions.
  • Reliability. Our primary goal is to provide reliable, safe, affordable power.
  • Innovation. Our app allows members to see their usage, pay bills and more. Smart thermostats allow members bet-ter control over their biggest energy user: HVAC.
  • Job creation. Partnering with other co-ops, we’re driving regional growth. Last year, economic development projects brought more than $2.7 billion in new capital investment and nearly 1,000 jobs to our region.
  • Community enrichment. Educational programs, youth development and support of local charitable organiza-tions are some ways we work alongside members to improve communities.

Shelby Energy is driven by a local fo-cus and a mission to serve and strength-en communities for the 14,526 members we serve.
