Ground cover

Debbie Asked

I have approximately 3/4 acre back yard and I need an alternative to mowing. Looking for some sort of ground cover that only get 4 inches tall but spreads easily. Low maintenance is a must since I am 70 and am mowing my own yard. I would also like some alternatives to bloom. Full sun.

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Debbie: Replacing turf with a perennial ground cover will eliminate the need to mow. There are several low-maintenance, sun-loving options to consider. Vinca, Lysmachia (Creeping Jenny), Ivy, Plumbago, and perennial Thyme just to name a few. There are also several low growing stonecrop sedums (stepables) that would work for your space. Visit your local garden centers to see what you like best. Given the large space you are planting, it may require a special order, but locally owned garden centers are usually happy to provide this service as long as the growers have the quantity available. They may also offer services to eliminate the grass, prep the soil and plant the ground cover that you choose.
