Moving ornamental grass

Bobby Asked

Is it too early in the season to transplant this grass?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Bobby: It is not too early to move your ornamental grass.  Early Spring is the best time to transplant.  This is also a good time to divide the root ball if needed. Grasses are low maintenance but grow quickly and benefit from being divided every few years. Go ahead and cut back your grass and get ready to transplant. It helps to have the new planting hole(s) prepped and ready to go before digging up the existing plant. For easy cleanup, tie a string around the clump of grass. This will help to manage the foliage and create a tied bundle after the blades are cut back. Digging will be much easier once the foliage is removed. Established ornamental grasses can be cumbersome to dig up. Use a sharp spade and get as much of the root system as possible. Transplant and treat like any new addition to the garden.
