Stand Down
Mountain Comprehensive Care Center is sponsoring a STAND DOWN for homeless,
disabled, and at-risk veterans on April 20, 2016, at the National Guard Armory,
Prestonsburg, from 10 am to 2 pm.
The STAND DOWN is a volunteer program, initiated in 1988 in San Diego, and
sponsored over a thousand times since, in cities across the United States. The goal of
STAND DOWN is to locate and provide some basic services to many homeless, at-
risk, and disabled veterans within a geographic region. It is estimated as many as 100
homeless veterans may reside within the Pike and Floyd County region.
Services at such an event are very much “out-reach” oriented. While we can provide a
shower, a haircut, a meal, and perhaps some clothing and toiletry items, the main focus is
to have service providers come together in one place so that our veterans can obtain
information about programs or benefits for which they may qualify.
We plan to have representatives present from Medicaid, SNAP (food stamp), Social
Security office, Ky. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Administration, dental screening,
health screening, etc.
