Margie Asked

I have had this plant for over 20 years. My mother-in-law gave it to me. I took it in and put it in the garage every fall and brought it back out in the spring. We had a very cold and long winter this year and my plant died. What is the name of it and where can I get another?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Margie: The plant in the photo you sent belongs to the Zephyranthes genus. Commonly known as rain lilies, these flowering bulbs are considered tropical for Kentucky gardeners. Some species may be marginal but I would be surprised if any survived this past winter. There are different species within this genus and I am not certain which you had but it resembles Zephryanthes grandiflora. As for purchasing these bulbs, you will probably have better luck online than in a garden center. Plant Delights Nursery is a reliable online source.
