The alarm blares. It’s 5 a.m. Time for Keneysha Rodney of Radcliff to begin a day that won’t end until around midnight.
Her weekday version of rush hour is familiar to any parent. After Keneysha readies herself, she awakens daughters Kennedi, 7, and Nadia, 5. They dress, eat a quick breakfast, gather their supplies for the day, and are at school by 7:10 a.m. On Wednesdays and Fridays, she stays to volunteer at their school because Keneysha wants her girls to understand the importance of their education.
The rest of the day depends on the day of the week. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, she’s at work at First Citizens Bank in Radcliff by 10 a.m. and home by 5:30 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays she volunteers in the AVID Program at John Hardin High School until 9:45 a.m. Keneysha mentors students. She hopes to inspire them to do better in school and go on to college.
Dinner, baths, homework, and church activities quickly consume each evening. It is what happens on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, however, that Keneysha believes will change their lives. On those days, she attends classes at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College (ECTC), preparing for a new career as a high school English teacher.
Keneysha says she likes to hear people express themselves in writing. “You need English,” she says. “Whatever job you do, you have to express yourself in some form. I want to help students do that in an effective manner.”
Interestingly, at age 30, Keneysha is the average age of students at ECTC. Many are also parents. Keneysha’s goal of simultaneously earning a degree, raising a family, and working is more and more common. It still requires sacrifice, and while it isn’t easy, it is easier than ever before.
Colleges and universities across the state have awakened to the vast numbers of adults who want to finish college or change careers. Many now offer evening or weekend classes. Students can often complete part or sometimes even all of their degree online.
Of course, 18-24-year-olds—the traditional college students—have certainly not been forgotten. They are still the primary focus for most Kentucky post-secondary schools.
High-schoolers have an abundance of choices today, and colleges and universities are vying for them, offering online applications and direct links to scholarship applications to make the admissions process easier. Financial aid is available if families know where to look.
In Kentucky, these choices include public and private schools as well as specialty schools. Did you know, for example, that Kentucky is home to an aeronautical college? Did you know at least one school offers a major in video game design, or that study abroad has become an important part of the college experience at many schools?
The number of options is why preparation for college should begin in middle school, according to folks such as Ted Franzeim, senior vice president for customer relations at Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority. “Be an advocate for yourself,” Franzeim recommends.
“Take advantage of the many resources that are out there.”
At Kentucky Living, we want to make the process smoother, too. Use this guide as a first step to thinking about which school is the best fit. Location, size, costs, student/faculty ratio, and available majors are just a few of the considerations when making this important decision. This guide gives you much of that information.
Back in Radcliff, it’s 8 p.m. and Keneysha has helped her little ones with their homework and tucked them in for the night. The house is blissfully quiet. It’s time for Keneysha to begin her own homework.
“Yes, it does get to be tiring,” Keneysha admits of her activity-packed days, “but the long-term benefits are worth it. This will translate into a better life for me and my children.”
SOMETIMES BEING A BOTHER CAN SERVE YOU WELL
“Be a pain.”
It sounds like odd advice coming from a state government agency, but it is nonetheless the first step to getting into the college of your choice on the gohigherky.com Web site created by the Kentucky Education Assistance Authority, known to many as KHEAA (pronounced Key-A).
“Sometimes educational agencies use a lot of jargon,” acknowledges Ted Franzeim, senior vice president for customer relations at KHEAA, “and we wanted to put it in terms students could relate to. What we are saying is that families need to be advocates for themselves. For many families, this is one of the biggest investments they are going to make.”
The gohigherky.com site is a good way to start making this investment wisely. It details each step in the college planning process and includes lots of concise, easy-to-navigate information, including virtual campus tours and in-depth information about individual schools. The site also allows you to automatically insert your information into financial aid and college applications.
“This site is for anyone thinking about any kind of education,” Franzeim says. “It is for people who have lost their job and want to go back to school, for those already working but wanting a change of career, and of course for high-schoolers wanting to get into college.”
KHEAA also publishes numerous guides for those interested in furthering their education. Guides for seniors and adults are on the Web site or can be obtained by e-mailing Tim Ballard, tballard@kheaa.com . There are additional online guides for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and college transfers.
By the way, KHEAA’s other advice for getting into college:
1. Push yourself. Working a little harder today will make getting into college easier.
2. Find the right fit. Find out which school is the best match for your career goals.
3. Put your hands on some cash. If you think you can’t afford college, think again. Aid is out there.

HOW MUCH IS THAT COLLEGE IN THE WINDOW?
Sticker shock can quickly set in when families begin looking at colleges. Even if tuition is reasonable, costs add up quickly when food, housing, books, fees, transportation, and clothing are figured in.
“Don’t be discouraged by costs,” says Ted Franzeim, senior vice president for customer relations at the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). “Kentucky has a great student aid program. Families just need to know what the financial aid programs are and how to access them.”
Franzeim says the KEYS program is a particularly good example and yet another reason why planning for college should begin in middle school.
“It is very different from programs in other states. In most states, the green light on merit-based programs goes off in the sophomore year and you are never eligible again. For Kentucky students, the green light continues all the way through high school,” says Franzeim.
