What Is This Plant? Has Red Berries And I See…

Gina Asked

What is this plant? Has red berries and I see small birds eating them all the time especially in the winter time

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Gina: The plant in the picture that you sent is Lonicera maackii, commonly known as Amur or Bush Honeysuckle. This multi-stemmed shrub is native to eastern Asia and produces fragrant flowers in the spring that develop into red berries later in the year. As you mentioned, the berries are a favorite winter food for birds. They help to disperse the seeds which produces new plants. This Honeysuckle is not something you would want to plant in the garden as the Kentucky Exotic Pest Plant Council considers it invasive.
