Plum trees

Jeremy Asked

Is there a certain type of plum tree to plant in our area tips and tricks to growing and about how long before baring fruit?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Jeremy. Plums can be grown in Kentucky. Cultivar selection and growing conditions are important factors to consider when growing these stone fruits. They require a minimum of six hours of direct sunlight, excellent drainage, and nutrient-rich soil. Good air circulation is important in reducing insect and disease problems. Plums will not tolerate heavy clay soil. Amendments may be needed to improve drainage. You can contact your County Cooperative Extension service if you are interested in having your soil tested. As far as cultivar selection, the later blooming cultivars are best for Kentucky gardeners. Early bloomers are more susceptible to late frost. For pollination purposes it is best to plant more than one cultivar that blooms at the same time. Depending on the size of the trees that you plant, it could take up to 3 years before you are able to harvest. Choosing disease-resistant varieties is essential in terms of health for any fruit tree. For more detailed information on growing plums and cultivar selection visit: plums.pdf (uky.edu).
