What is this ‘mystery’ plant?

Hannah Asked

My son came upon this plant and I want to know what it is.

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Hannah.
The plant in the photo that you sent is a Trillium. The Trillium genus including ten different species are found throughout the state of Kentucky. These native perennials thrive in nutrient-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

They require part shade; morning sun and afternoon shade is best. As far as the species of the one in your picture, I can’t be certain but the variegated foliage along with the deep bloom color is indicative of a Trillium recurvatum. They are a lovely addition to any woodland or shade garden.
