Why didn’t my Calla Lillies come back?

Angie Asked

Why didn’t my Calla Lillies come back this year?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi Angie: Calla lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica) are considered tropical for Kentucky gardeners. These South African natives can be reliably grown in hardiness zones 8 and above. Here in Kentucky we are gardening in zones 6a, 6b and 7a but 8 is pushing it for us. Temperatures dipping below 10 degrees F will not be tolerated by the Calla Lily. That being said, if they are planted in a protected area and we have a mild winter they may return the following spring but they are not a reliable perennial in Kentucky. We can enjoy these beautiful plants outdoors during the growing season and as houseplants during the winter.
