Make-Ahead French Toast Casserole

Ingredients

  • 1 lb sourdough bread
  • 3 C whole milk
  • 8 eggs
  • ½ C brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Zest of ½ orange

Directions

Grease 9×13-inch casserole dish. Tear sourdough loaf into 1-inch pieces and spread evenly in baking dish. In large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, spices and orange zest until completely smooth. 

Pour egg mixture over bread and press bread down slightly with spatula so that each piece is touched or covered by egg mixture. Cover with foil and place in refrigerator for at least an hour, preferably overnight. 

When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°. Bake, covered with foil, for 45 minutes or just until set. Remove from oven and let cool 10 minutes before serving. Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar and fresh berries. Serves 8.
