Kids And Co-ops

Supporting local children
MAYFIELD
West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative collaborated with CoBank to donate $10,000 for two CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) chapters. CASA advocates for abused and neglected children.

“CoBank said they would give $5,000 and we could match that,” says David Smart, president and CEO of West Kentucky Rural Electric Co-op. “We chose CASA because of what they do for children of this area. We organized this during the International Year of the Cooperative, and that emphasizes concern for the community. That is one area where we make a big effort to participate in whatever we can.”

Identity gift
GLASGOW
In a crisis, every second counts, so staff members of Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative have been fingerprinting kids as a part of Project ID. A joint effort between the cooperative and South Central Rural Telephone Cooperative, Project ID provides a way to identify children in case of an emergency.

“Safeguarding our children and grandchildren is something we are all very concerned about,” says Bill Prather, president and CEO of Farmers Rural Electric Co-op. “Project ID is a service we provide to help address that concern. We hope no member ever needs this program, but it’s there just in case.”

Wonderful workplace
FLEMINGSBURG
“It is a friendly place to work. They work together as a family. They have great training programs. Everyone is on the same page. They not only know how to work among themselves, but how to service the entire community. They have great customer service.”

Those are just a few comments from nomination forms that helped make Fleming-Mason Energy Cooperative the Employer of the Year, according to Crystal Ruark, executive director of the Fleming County Chamber of Commerce, which presented the award. The award is based on nominations from the chamber’s membership.
