Gone Fishing

With school out, it’s a perfect time for kids to do what kids do. Getting outside and fishing would be at the top of the list for many families.

The Kentucky State Parks have several fishing events in June for children. Here’s a list of the fishing events planned across the state at parks.

A Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held on June 9 at three parks—Barren River Lake State Resort Park near Glasgow, Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park near Burkesville, and Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park near Dawson Springs. Expert help and advice will be available to beginners and prizes will be awarded.

On June 2, Kenlake State Resort Park north of Murray will have its Fishing For Fun day at its marina on Kentucky Lake. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and there will be prizes given.

Also on June 2, Green River Lake State Park near Campbellsville will present Kids’ Outdoor Day, which will include fishing, archery, trap shooting, hikes, boating, and more. Door prizes will be awarded. All events are free and include lunch.

The first weekend in June is National Fishing Week and in Kentucky, fishing is free and no license is required during the weekend. (Children 15 and younger do not need a license at any time.)

These June fishing events will perfect practice for the 3rd Annual Greenbo Junior Fishing Tournament on July 28 at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park at Greenup. Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish and most fish caught in age groups 15 years and under. The tournament starts at 10 a.m.
