Help For History, The United Way, And Special Olympics

Restoring history
After proudly standing since 1927, the World War I doughboy statue was knocked to the ground when a tornado ripped through West Liberty in 2012. Since then sculptors in nearby Morehead, using pieces found by townspeople, carefully repaired the local landmark. Then staff members of Licking Valley Rural Electric Cooperative used their bucket and service trucks to put the refurbished 800-pound, 8-foot statue back in its rightful place.

“My staff and I were blessed to be part of restoring the doughboy back to its original place of honor,” says Kerry K. Howard, manager and CEO of Licking Valley Rural Electric Co-op. “The doughboy was another step in the healing process and the rebuilding effort of our members following the devastation of the March 2, 2012, tornado.”

Helping the community
Congrats to Pennyrile Electric co-op for being honored with United Way’s People Helping People Award for large firms. The honor goes to organizations that provide outstanding support to the United Way. This year the cooperative pledged $5,800 more than last year through employee pledges and a corporate gift.

“Our employees are very giving, and this award demonstrates that,” says Sandy Grogan, vice president and CFO at Pennyrile Electric co-op and 2013 United Way chair. “They have the true spirit of people helping people.”

Summer Olympians
Want to see athletes with plenty of heart and grit? Then plan on attending the 2014 State Summer Games for Special Olympics, June 6-8 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives are once again platinum sponsors of the games.

“One of our main Touchstone Energy core values is ‘Commitment to Community,'” says Mary Beth Nance, director of Member Services for Fleming-Mason Energy Cooperative. “This event allows us to serve communities across the state.”
