Hydrangea happy place

Dianna Asked

Where is the best spot to plant a hydrangeas? Does it need full sun or part?

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Dianna: Hydrangeas are a large group of plants that consist of several species and hundreds of varieties. Each species has its own specific growing requirements. Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal for most hydrangeas. They will not tolerate wet soil. Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) are probably the most common species grown in Kentucky. They grow best in part sun. Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) and smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) thrive in full to part sun. Afternoon shade is helpful in reducing drought stress during the hot summer months. Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) are great for areas with more shade than sun. With so many options to choose from, there is one for every garden.
