Native Plant Spigelia or Indian Pink

Delorise Asked

Gardening center that might carry Kentucky Native perennial called Spigelia?
First time I remember seeing the plant was in Perry County, Kentucky as a young child. Story was featured in this month of Kentucky Living.

The Gardener’s Answer

Hi, Delorise: Spigelia (Indian Pink) is one of my personal favorites. Start by looking at local garden centers that specialize in native plant material. If this is not something that they typically carry, they may be able to special order it for you, if it is available from their growers. Your local Farmers Market is also a good place to check. Mail order is another option. Dropseed Nursery in Goshen, Kentucky is a reliable source for native perennials. Visit their website at https://www.dropseednursery.com/. The horticulture agent at the Madison County Cooperative Extension Service https://madison.ca.uky.edu/ will be a great resource for you.
