Powdered mildew
Kathy Asked
Every summer my garden phlox gets powered mildew. How do I prevent this from happening?
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi Kathy, Phlox is a common host of powdery mildew. There are varieties that are more disease resistant than others, but some are very prone to this fungal disease. This is especially true if they are planted in more shade than sun or overcrowded. Good air circulation is important in preventing the spread of powdery mildew. Avoid overhead watering and be sure to remove and discard all infected parts during the growing season and during fall clean up. Diseased foliage that is not removed will overwinter and infect next season’s growth. In severe cases or if cultural practices are not sufficient, fungicides labeled specifically for powdery mildew can be used as a preventative measure.
