Pruning hostas
Mark and Zan Asked
When should I prune hostas? And when should I transplant hostas?
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi Mark and Zan, It is the time of year to start thinking about winterizing the garden. Hostas can be cut back after a hard freeze, and the foliage has turned yellow/brown. This will allow plants time to store the optimal amount of energy for the next growing season. You can also wait to cut them back early next spring before any new growth begins. This is only recommended for healthy hostas to prevent overwintering any potential disease or insect issues. If you prefer a tidier garden, fall is a good option. As far as transplanting, it is too late in the fall to move them now. The next best option is early spring just as the new growth emerges. Moving them in the spring will allow the entire growing season for them to get established. Treat them as any new addition to the garden and make sure they receive sufficient moisture during the hot summer months.
