Beans Cafe & Bakery Bean Soup

  • 1 lb dry white Great Northern beans
  • 2 quarts water
  • 4 oz bacon, chopped
  • 8 oz white onion, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp salt


Dice raw bacon into small pieces. Add the bacon to a large stockpot and cook on medium heat until it begins to brown. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent. Add beans, water, pepper and salt. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer for 3 hours, checking for softness of the beans to indicate doneness. 

You can store beans in the refrigerator up to seven days. When reheating, if too thick, add additional water to bring to the proper consistency.
