A history of Miss Farmers
Winners of the Miss Farmers RECC Scholarship Pageant for the past 62 years were invited to this year’s annual meeting of Farmers Rural Electric Cooperative. Each of the nearly 30 winners who attended was recognized individually as she walked across the stage, and they were all also showcased in a slide show.
“As part of Farmers RECC’s commitment to youth, we have sponsored the pageant since 1950,” says Bill Prather, Farmers RECC president and CEO. “However, due to steadily declining participation, it is time to retire the pageant. We continue to support area youth through scholarships, the Youth Tour program, sports teams, and many other commitments. We will continue to meet the needs of our youth in any way possible.”
Jobs for students
Haley McCoy with Jackson Energy Cooperative is playing matchmaker—between area manufacturers and graduating students looking for jobs. Haley has formed the New Opportunities Workforce initiative and is partnering with area technology centers, manufacturers, and community agencies to help students prepare for jobs and to let businesses know about the students.
“Our first objective is to fund scholarships for 2014 so students can finish a training program and be employed. Ultimately we want to establish training programs within the vocational school systems that feed students into local manufacturing jobs. We have already partnered with the Somerset Community College to create a specialized certification for students that show they are ready for employment. Those who receive the scholarships will be guaranteed a job.”
