Tomato troubles
Keith Asked
There is something that is eating my tomato plants up. They start at the bottom of the plants and slowly works their way to the top, they turn the leaves and the stalk of the leaves brown. I found some little white things on the under side of the leaves too.
The Gardener’s Answer
Hi Keith, Tomatoes are susceptible to various insect and disease issues. Some varieties are more disease resistant than others and the health can be significantly influenced by growing conditions. From your description, it sounds like your plants might be dealing with a fungal issue. Factors such as inconsistent moisture, overhead watering, and too much shade can contribute to the development of fungal diseases. The white on the underside of the leaves could be powdery mildew, another fungus, but it could also be aphids. Take a sample to your Cooperative Extension Service for a more definitive answer. The horticulture/agriculture agent will be able to give you specifics.
