Simple comfort food

Eat, shop and relax at Farmwald’s Restaurant and Bakery
WHEN JOE AND LAURA FARMWALD opened Farmwald’s Restaurant and Bakery in 2019, they envisioned a business that would offer hearty, made-from-scratch foods, hand-crafted products and employment for members of their Amish community. What they didn’t predict is just how successful it would be.
The restaurant saw a brief lull during the pandemic, but when businesses opened back up, demand boomed. “We were just crazy,” Joe says, “and it’s been crazy ever since.”
Located just off exit 58 on Interstate 65, Farmwald’s serves between 1,000 and 1,500 customers daily during the summer. During its first year alone, Farmwald’s served customers from every state and 13 countries.
“We bake stuff from scratch,” Joe says. “I think that’s what draws them to us. But they like the simple life, too.”
Customer-favorite items include the Amish farmer’s breakfast—a biscuit and gravy, two pancakes, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns and scrambled eggs—and items like a ribeye sandwich, pulled pork sliders and fried catfish for lunch and dinner. In the bakery, doughnuts, pastries, pies, cakes and bread are made fresh daily.
Customers also love the wide array of Amish foods and crafts for purchase, from jams, jellies, pickles and popcorn to natural health products, candles and furniture. In mid-November, the restaurant completed a renovation and expansion that has turned the whole upstairs into additional shopping space—and it’s all decked out for the holidays with Christmas decor, handmade baskets, jewelry boxes, hats and other Amish crafts. “It’s going to be a Christmas wonderland,” Joe says.
Located at 3720 L&N Turnpike Road, Horse Cave, Farmwald’s Restaurant and Bakery is open 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday–Friday, 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday.
