Stella’s Cinnamon Rolls

  • Dough
  • 1 Tbsp yeast
  • ½ C warm water
  • ⅓ C unsalted butter
  • ½ C milk
  • ¼ C sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3 ½ C all-purpose flour
  • 4 Tbsp melted butter
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • Filling
  • ¾ C sugar
  • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ C unsalted butter, softened
  • Frosting
  • 2 C powdered sugar
  • 4 Tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla


For dough, combine yeast and water in a small bowl and set aside. In small sauce pan, heat milk to melt ⅓ cup butter. In large mixing bowl, mix sugar, salt and egg along with milk and butter mixture. Add half the flour until well blended. Add yeast mixture, then remaining flour. Mix until dough forms a ball; remove and place on floured surface. Knead for 5 minutes. Place in a greased bowl; cover for 1 hour or until doubled in size. 

Punch dough and roll out on floured surface to an approximately 9×15-inch rectangle. For filing, mix ¾ cup sugar and cinnamon in small bowl. Spread softened butter onto dough, then sprinkle sugar/cinnamon mixture on top. Roll dough with filling to form a 15-inch log. 

Coat 9×13-inch pan with 4 Tbsp melted butter and sprinkle with 3 Tbsp sugar. Slice dough into 12 rounds. Place dough circles flat with edges touching in the pan. Cover and let rise until doubled. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes. 

For frosting, whisk powdered sugar, milk and vanilla; pour over slightly cooled rolls.
