Salt River Electric Co-op’s local section of Kentucky Living recently featured photos taken by Randy Burba, vice president of Customer Service and Marketing at the co-op, during an archery competition in Bardstown.

“We notice that our members love to see pictures of young people, so at least three or four times a year we like to photograph an activity involving area youth,” Burba says. Six hundred young archers representing 20 schools took part. “The archery competition was really fun. There were young people from 4th grade through high school seniors at all ability levels.”

Blue Grass Energy Co-op is directing all its fund-raising efforts this year to the two hospice organizations that offer compassionate end-of-life care services to families in the area.

“This is the first year we have streamlined our corporate giving with a specific organization,” says Denise Myers, Energy Solutions manager for the cooperative. “It is a particularly good fit because one of our linemen passed away from cancer and we were so touched by their work.”

In addition to donating funds, Blue Grass Energy is providing time and people power for hospice events. The co-op also planned a silent auction at this year’s annual meeting so members could get involved as well.

Haley McCoy, Youth Services director for Jackson Energy Cooperative, has been named to the executive committee for Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR). Laun-ched in 2013 by Gov. Steve Beshear and Congressman Hal Rogers, SOAR is designed to bring people together to improve the economic future of eastern Kentucky.

“Through SOAR, we can create new partnerships and help identify regional assets that will make it easier to achieve goals that assist every member of our communities,” says McCoy. “This is what co-ops serve to do, and we can have even greater impact through the SOAR initiative.”
