WASHINGTON, D.C. – As more than 80 World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans from across Kentucky visited Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to see the memorials built to honor their service, they were joined by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) at the World War II Memorial.

“It is my privilege to welcome a distinguished group of Kentuckians to our nation’s capital,” McConnell said on the Senate floor, citing the “incredible work of the Honor Flight program.”

“The Honor Flight Bluegrass Chapter has brought hundreds of veterans, most of them Kentuckians, to Washington for this purpose. Despite the significant logistical and financial planning that goes into these trips, Honor Flight works to make sure that veterans have the opportunity to travel at no cost to themselves.”

Kentucky’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives also sponsor an annual Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.; this year is its seventh. The 2017 flight is set for September 16 with the Honor Flight Kentucky chapter at the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington. The public is personally invited to join in the celebration as we show our appreciation to these deserving veterans.

“The veterans we’ve sponsored in the past have returned saying the Honor Flight was one of the greatest days of their lives,” says Joe Settles, manager of Member Services at East Kentucky Power Cooperative.

“The program organizes travel and food for these veterans, many of whom would never be able to visit our nation’s capital or see the memorials at all without Honor Flight,” McConnell continued. “The national monuments built on the Mall pay tribute to those who sacrificed for the cause of freedom. I would like to add my voice to those who welcome these veterans and thank them for their service to our country.”
