Co-ops Demonstrate Electrical Smarts

Electric safety magic
Nicholasville
Abracadabra. Alakazam. Wait. When it comes to electricity, the magic words are stop, look, and think. So says Arkansas magician Scott Davis, who presented his electrical safety program, Making Accidents Disappear, at eight schools in the Blue Grass Energy Co-op service area. More than 3,500 elementary children learned electrical safety with tricks such as a talking dry erase board and a tissue-paper hat.

“We have safety programs and travel to schools,” says Sha Collier, communications advisor for Blue Grass Energy, “but when we have Scott come in, it’s more exciting. It’s fun because it’s magic, but it’s informative because the show focuses on safety.” For details, go to www.makingaccidentsdisappear.com.

Caulk it up
McKee
Jackson Energy advisors Todd Claiborne and Roger Medlock shared energy-efficiency advice with co-op employees during a new Lunch & Learn program. After a 20-minute session and free lunch, each employee left with a tube of caulk and more knowledge about how to minimize air leaks, one of the top energy wasters. “All the sessions have been full,” reports Karen Combs, director of public relations. “Everyone likes free food, and the sessions give us more informed and educated employees.” The new program began in January.

On-the-spot audits
Elizabethtown
Immediate scheduling for a free, home energy audit was just one of the benefits approximately 1,200 people received at the Nolin Rural Electric Co-op booth during the Lincoln Trail Home and Garden Expo. Co-op personnel also talked with visitors about energy efficiency.

Nolin Rural Electric Co-op has been participating in the two-day event for more than 20 years, says Patsy Whitehead, communications coordinator. “This year, we had the opportunity to talk with a lot of people who are building or remodeling,” Whitehead recalls, “and were able to tell them ways they could make their homes more energy efficient.”
